It’s always exciting to find a makers mark on an old item you find at the barn or yard sale. One day the work you are doing will be old and having your touch mark on it will thrill someone. This course will cover the most basic concepts of producing a one of a kind touch mark. We will do individual and specific design work in relation to making a positive or negative stamp out of W-1 tool steel. We will utilize the simplest means in tooling your design into tool steel using engraving, chiseling, chasing, filing and punching. We may also find it necessary to produce some small custom tools to get the work done right. Once properly heat treated, this touch mark should last a lifetime. An appropriate temperament of patience and steadiness will be necessary as we will be working on a very small scale with careful intentions in modeling your mark. Preliminary designs will be exchanged and verified between instructor and student prior to the course.

If you have always wondered how or just been intrigued with making your very own touchmark, this quick course will get the ideas flowing.

Some stills from Lee’s class. #leesauder #ironsmelting #somethingfromnothingSo not only did we make 4 blooms of iron, Lee guided us through remelting all the bits that fell off the blooms in forging and carburizing it in this smaller furnace. We were able to make some beautiful high carbon material! #homemadesteel #makesometoolsLee Sauder is amazing asset to our community and it was a pleasure to have him back for another smelting workshop. This is the climax, when a big beautiful bloom of Iron gets brought into the world! #bloomerysmelting #oretoiron #nothingtosomethingRED hammer faces, means one thing, it’s Smelting Week at NESM. Busting up ore and making clay, the foundations of a successful smelt.
