In this fast paced, 5 day class the student’s goal will be to complete a 4-5” Damascus bladed hunting knife of full tang construction. Students will begin the first day with standard pattern welding protocol and will work to complete and pattern one billet of Damascus steel. The students will then forge a 4-5” bladed hunting knife out of that steel. Grinding and heat treating will be covered as well as how to fit a handle of either Micarta or exotic wood. The knives will be polished and etched to reveal the dramatic pattern of the pattern welded material.

Potential students should be confident in their forging ability and should have a general understanding of blacksmith shop practices. Students should be comfortable with the use of power tools like drill presses, hand grinders, belt sanders and hand tools. Forge welding experience is helpful but not necessary.

Blade size and design are at the instructors discretion and to be determined with each student. Several styles of knives could be made based on student experience. A beginners level course in blacksmithing or bladesmithing is required.

Some stills from Lee’s class. #leesauder #ironsmelting #somethingfromnothingSo not only did we make 4 blooms of iron, Lee guided us through remelting all the bits that fell off the blooms in forging and carburizing it in this smaller furnace. We were able to make some beautiful high carbon material! #homemadesteel #makesometoolsLee Sauder is amazing asset to our community and it was a pleasure to have him back for another smelting workshop. This is the climax, when a big beautiful bloom of Iron gets brought into the world! #bloomerysmelting #oretoiron #nothingtosomethingRED hammer faces, means one thing, it’s Smelting Week at NESM. Busting up ore and making clay, the foundations of a successful smelt.
