The goal of this class is familiarize the student with the tools and techniques that are employed by the blacksmith.

We will start with a tour of the shop and discuss the tools and their uses, including coal and gas forges and their operation. We will also be focusing in on the proper use of the hammer and anvil and developing good habits that will aid in productivity. We will put our good habits to work learning to forge tapers, upsets, shaping, and top tool work such as splitting and punching. Each of these skills will be applied to specific projects. We will be focusing on the process and technique of forging, not the project, time will be taken to diagnose our mistakes and understand how to overcome them as they arise. Several exercises will provide you with a glimpse of the useful products made through the hot forging. This is an excellent choice for those wishing to move to the Intermediate level Blacksmithing course or move to other simple topical courses.

Come ready to learn and leave with an understanding of the skills you will need to do the work of the blacksmith.
