As presented by the American Bladesmith Society and in cooperation with the New England School of Metalwork to foster and support the hand skills associated with Bladesmithing.

This one day instructional and hands on event will focus on bringing young students (12-18) in contact with regional experts in the field of custom bladesmithing. Safety overview, parental guidance and a two to one, student/instructor ratio will ensure a long lasting and memorable event for youth interested in the hand forging of steel.

Hosted at the newly renovated facility in Auburn Maine, students will gain measurable insight towards the properly sequence in forging, grinding and heat treatment of a small knife. Parental supervision for those under 15 will be required, all others may sign a liability release. Morning safety demonstrations will be followed by the students hand forging their own blade, an onsite lunch will be provided and the afternoon will see the students grind the blades to shape, heat treat them and wrap the handle with paracord.

Throughout the entire learning process students will be giving the strictest attention to details of appropriate work habits, safety and have several facts of artistic and historic context of what they are doing related to them. Hand forging skills are and can be a relevant source of income for those gifted in the crafts industry, bladesmithing in particular is seeing a resurgence in the US and has been gaining momentum through social media and a consumer interest in higher quality everyday items such as kitchen knives, hunting knives and hand tools.

Tim Potier is the ABS liason for the Youth Programs which are scheduled and held around the US each year.
