This 3 day class will explore the design and manufacture of a forged folding knife inspired by the Japanese Higonokami. It utilizes a “friction” mechanism that holds the blade open by incorporating the leverage of the user’s palm against a tang. The blade is safely held closed using the friction of the handles against the blade. This is a simple and rugged design and is highly marketable and very useful. Design, materials and techniques will be discussed and each student can expect to complete one folding knife during the class. There will be opportunity for embellishment such as texturing and file-work.
