Blacksmithing and cooking over an open fire have almost always gone hand in hand. Both require the starting and tending of a fire. Both use heat to accomplish their goals. One feeds the mind, the other feeds the body and both feed the soul.
Just like blacksmithing, cooking a meal over an open fire is one of the most satisfying and intrinsically human experiences we can have. Both nourish and strengthen, not only the individual, but the community.
So by definition alone, forging all the tools you need to cook over said open fire yourself, HAS to be the absolute pinnacle of human experience!
Want to know what that could feel like? Join, me (Lucas Damen) for a rare 2 day “weekend warrior” class as we will forge everything we need to get cooking over that campfire.
This is a beginner to intermediate level class that requires some prior knowledge of the 7 fundamental forging processes including forge welding. We will be working in coal forges and using exclusively traditional techniques to achieve our goal.
Our goal will be to make a complete tri-pod spit set with all the accoutrements including fire tending tools, s-hooks, a trammel hook, skillet ring, lid lifter and more!
If you are looking to expand your blacksmithing knowledge AND your capability for cooking in the great outdoors, come spend the weekend with me, let’s light some fires and LET’S GET COOKING!

Lucas began his journey into blacksmithing a mere 5 years ago. He studied as an apprentice in a traditional blacksmith shop in Portland for 2 years before venturing out on his own to focus on his business and artistic expression. He started Hammer Forge Creations in 2015 and has since become an active member of the Fryeburg Fair Blacksmith Shop and a volunteer blacksmith at the Historic Scribner’s Mill in Harrison.
