Forging the Medieval Arming Sword
with
Emiliano Carrillo
Class runs: September 8-13
Tuition: $850
Material fee: $100
Skill level: Intermediate Bladesmithing and up, should have good hand forging and grinding skills
In this six day workshop we will be forging medieval swords based on Ewart Oakeshotts typology, specifically Type XV or XVa Swords. They will feature 28-30 inch blades and steel guards and pommels, with wooden grips covered in leather. We will focus on the subtleties of grip making and ergonomics of the sword as well as hot fitting guards to blades and grinding diamond cross sections and reinforced points.
Previous bladesmithing experience is required as this is a complex project and a lot to fit into six days. Students should be comfortable forging even bevels and grinding flat blades.
Emiliano Carrillo has been bladesmithing for over 6 years with an emphasis on Viking age and migration period pattern welding. He has created many Seaxes and Viking swords in this time striving for historical accuracy and authenticity within his craft. He graduated from Hampshire College where he was able to pursue historical bladesmithing and Scandinavian material culture and history. He has created his own steel and experimented with ancient pattern welding techniques striving to understand how these incredible weapons left to us in the archaeological record were made and what they meant.
