Skill level: Beginner and up, familiarity with forging/heat treat helpful
Learn to design and forge Green Wood carving tools for your own use. Using the basic set of spoon carvers tools; both the straight and bent knife to lead in depth discussions on working geometry, blade and handle design as well as haptics. Course will be focused on handwork and simple approaches to getting highly functional results and will finish with testing your new tools on freshly cut wood. Suitable for beginners with room for more advanced projects.
Reid Schwartz is a toolmaker and Green woodworker from Washington, New Hampshire. He studies and forges woodcarving tools, carves wooden spoons and other items from green wood, works with Birch bark, tree roots, and builds canoes. Reid has a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where he studied sculpture and drawing. His work has been published in Popular Woodworking Magazine, Wooden Boat Magazine, as well as Small Boats Magazine and He has taught and assisted courses for Plymouth Craft and The Penland School of Craft.
