This course will be an introduction to chasing and repousse. Chasing and repousse is a technique where sheet metal is struck from the backside for depth, and then chiseled from the front for detailed. In this class we will work in a scale similar to Menuki (Japanese charms used in sword handles). Students will learn the basic toolmaking and techniques required to work on small scale chased projects. We will focus on techniques and tools that are accessible and available.
Originally from the Boston area, Andrew Meers is a former student of J.D. Smith and received a BFA in Sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and received his MFA in Metalsmithing from SIU, Carbondale. Andrew earned his ABS Journeyman in 2013 and his Mastersmith rating in 2015.
Making objects is a way for me to explore various techniques, processes and narrative themes. I take inspiration from handcrafted objects as well as the intrinsic qualities of materials both natural and refined. Dynamic movement, precision, and the palpable click of a lock are the tangible features of a folding knife that excite me. I forge, grind and machine pieces that reference natural objects, animals and the intrinsic beauty of hand-held objects.
