This is an alignment of epic proportion. Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from the undisputed best in the craft.
Here is your opportunity to explore this common household tool using basic anvil and bench techniques. The legendary American Blacksmith, Peter Ross will base our work on typical 18th century models such as the ones pictured, with 4 or 5 inch laminated blades but there is ample room to use your own styling and decoration.
In addition to the forging there will be grinding, filing and heat treating led by the world renowned British Scissor-maker, Grace Horne, relating the crucial subtle methods in the tuning required to make them cut properly. Plan on spending time at the bench in addition to the anvil. While modern scissors are often finished in precision grinding machines, we will do most of the shaping freehand, as 18th century scissor makers and grinders did.
They may be small, but these are a very challenging forging. Expect to practice the forgings several times before starting on a finished pair. Don’t let the small size fool you. They are a big project.
In addition to daytime shop work, reserve some extra energy for related evening slide shows on the legacy and history of the scissor.
