In this class we will be forging short Viking Seaxe using wrought iron and 15n20 in a SanMai construction (Laminated) of blades (4-6 inches) and hilting them based on historical examples from Viking Age Scandinavia.

Students will have the chance to examine several authentic original blades from the Viking Age to help inform their work. We will be creating simple sheathes for the knives, focusing on leather tooling and decoration techniques.

This class will cover a broad range of topics including period design aspects, specialty forging of laminated steel, grinding, heat treating, and finishing wrought iron clad blades as well as different methods of finishing handles, sheath making, and leather tooling.

Emiliano Carrillo has been bladesmithing for over 6 years with an emphasis on Viking age and migration period pattern welding. He has created many Seaxes and Viking swords in this time striving for historical accuracy and authenticity within his craft. He graduated from Hampshire College where he was able to pursue historical bladesmithing and Scandinavian material culture and history. He has created his own steel and experimented with ancient pattern welding techniques striving to understand how these incredible weapons left to us in the archaeological record were made and what they meant.
