What I have found to be one of the largest stumbling blocks for students in my beginner classes is grinding bevels and plunge lines. With each knife only giving students the opportunity to grind one set of each it is one of the hardest skills to teach, and to learn, in a classroom setting. For that reason I’ve developed this course to focus exclusively on those skills.

In this class we will focus on the hardest grinding operations for the new knifemaker: bevels and plunge lines. Through the use of precut blanks and results-focused instruction, students will have the opportunity to spend two days focusing on how to achieve flat bevels and crisp, clean plunge lines that are ready for hand sanding.

We will focus on controlling plunge line shape and position as well as creating flat, clean bevels. We will cover sweeping plunge lines, square plunge lines, the use of files in finishing plunge lines, getting good, flat bevels, and more.
