A bird and trout knife is a small, lightweight knife popular with hunters, anglers, and fowlers, and can also be used for light carving, whittling, fire-starting, and food preparation. It’s a versatile and handy tool that can do more than it’s small size might suggest. In this three day class students will learn to make one of these delightful little knives for themselves.
Starting from raw stock, we will forge, grind, heat treat, and finish the blades before making the guard and handle and completing the knife. We will be discussing the design philosophy of a successful bird and trout knife, both functionally and aesthetically, in order to marry theory and practice to produce a useful, handy, and attractive tool that anyone would be happy to carry while exploring the woods and waters of our beautiful region.
No forging experience is necessary for this beginner-level class, just a willingness to learn and make mistakes. In the end, students will leave with a beautiful, functional, and handy knife of their own construction.
